Hey, I recently found out that all my old Instagram stories don’t just disappear forever—they’re stored in an archive. That’s great, but now I’m trying to figure out how to “unarchive” one. Basically, I’d like to re-share or highlight a past story, but I can’t see an obvious “unarchive” button like there is for posts. I’m guessing the option to bring a story back live isn’t the same as unarchiving a post, since stories are temporary. What’s the correct process to view archived stories and put them back out there for people to see? Can they only be added to highlights, or can I actually re-share them as if they’re new stories? A step-by-step would be awesome because Instagram menus are confusing.

Hi, I went through this same confusion a couple of months ago. Instagram handles archived stories differently than archived posts. When you archive a post, you can restore it back to your feed. But with stories, there’s no “restore” button because they were temporary in the first place. Instead, when you go to your profile → three lines (menu) → Archive → Stories Archive, you’ll see every story you’ve ever posted, neatly organized by date. From there, you have two main choices: Re-share it as a new story. Tap on the story in your archive, then hit “Share.” It’ll publish again as if it’s brand new, complete with the usual 24-hour lifespan. Add it to a Highlight. This pins it permanently on your profile under the circle Highlights section, which is a good way to “unarchive” it for anyone visiting your page. So, the short version: you can’t technically move a story back to its old place, but you can bring it back into the spotlight either by re-sharing or putting it into a highlight. That’s Instagram’s way of “unarchiving.” There’s no direct unarchive for stories. Go to Profile → Archive → Stories. Tap the one you want and either re-share it as a new story or add it to your Highlights so it stays visible. Stories work differently from posts. Archived stories never return to their old timeline spot, but you can re-publish them. Go into Profile → Archive → Stories, pick one, then tap “Share.” That pushes it live again for 24 hours. Or, if you’d rather keep it permanently, tap “Highlight” to add it to your profile’s highlights section. It’s Instagram’s way of letting you recycle content without literally restoring it. I’ve done this with old travel stories—it’s the only way. You can’t truly unarchive a story. You can only re-share it from your archive or save it into a Highlight. Posts can be unarchived, stories can only be reused or pinned. Open your Instagram archive (Profile → Menu → Archive → Stories). Tap the story you want, then hit “Share” to make it live again, or “Highlight” to pin it. Stories don’t restore like posts—they only resurface as new or pinned. Unlike posts, stories can’t be restored to their original date. You can only re-share them or place them in Highlights. Go into Archive → Stories, choose one, and share again. That way, followers see it fresh or saved on your profile.
