Hey, I’ve been seeing people repost Instagram stories, and I’m trying to figure out exactly how it works. Sometimes when someone tags me in their story, I get an option to “Add to Your Story,” but other times that option doesn’t show up. I’m guessing it has to do with privacy settings or whether they tagged me. Is there a way to repost any story, or is it limited only to the ones you’re tagged in? I’d also like to know if there’s a difference between sharing directly inside Instagram versus using third-party apps or screenshots. Ideally, I’d like to do it the proper way that keeps the original credit. Can anyone break down the steps and maybe mention any limitations or workarounds?

You can only repost a story directly if you’re tagged. Look for the “Add to Your Story” option in your DM notification. If not tagged, no native option—just screenshots or asking them to reshare.

When I first tried reposting, I was confused too. The only built-in way is if someone tags you. That shows up in your DMs with the option to add it to your story. If you’re not tagged, you can’t natively repost. I’ve seen people just screenshot and share, but that’s a little clunky. Personally, I ask the person to tag me if I want to repost. Saves time and gives credit without looking like I stole their content.

Instagram only allows reposts of stories you’re tagged in. You’ll see “Add to Your Story” in DMs. Without a tag, the only workaround is screenshots or screen recordings—with the user’s permission.

The repost button appears only when you’re tagged. Tap “Add to Your Story” from your DMs, customize, and share. If the account is private or resharing is disabled, you won’t get the option. Otherwise, you’ll need permission and a manual method like screenshots.

Hi, if someone tags you, you’ll see the “Add to Story” button in your DMs. Otherwise, no direct repost—Instagram limits it for privacy.

To repost: check your DMs after being tagged, hit “Add to Your Story,” and publish. If you’re not tagged, there’s no built-in option. Screenshots or recordings work, but always ask permission—especially if the account is private.

Hey, so here’s the deal—Instagram doesn’t give you a blanket “repost any story” button. The official way only works if the person tags you in their story. When that happens, you’ll get a DM notification that says “@username mentioned you in their story.” Right underneath that, there’s usually an “Add This to Your Story” option. Tap it, and it’ll open up in your editor so you can resize, add stickers, text, and then post it as your own story. That repost will credit the original user automatically.

Now, if you weren’t tagged, you won’t see that option at all. In that case, the only real ways are screenshots, screen recordings, or third-party apps—but those don’t give the same clean credit and can feel a bit sketchy.

One important detail: if the person who tagged you has a private account and you don’t follow them, you won’t be able to repost. Also, if they’ve turned off resharing in their privacy settings, the option disappears.

So, short answer: tagged = repost button. Not tagged = you’ll need permission and maybe a workaround. That’s how Instagram designed it to protect user privacy.
