Hey everyone, I’m trying to figure out how to make my Twitter account private so only people I approve can see my tweets. Right now, anyone can view what I post, even without following me, and that’s not what I want. I know there’s a way to lock tweets, but the settings seem a bit hidden, and I don’t want to mess anything up. Basically, I’d like to restrict my account so only approved followers can view and interact with my posts, while everyone else gets blocked from seeing my content. Also, if I switch to private, I’m wondering whether this affects past tweets, and if people who already follow me stay or need to request access again. Can anyone explain clearly how to do this and what changes when you make the switch?

Hi! Making your Twitter account private is actually really simple once you know where to look. Open the Twitter app (or website), go to Settings & Privacy → Privacy and Safety → Audience and tagging. There, you’ll see an option called “Protect your Tweets.” Toggle that on, and your account instantly becomes private. What this does: only your current followers can see your tweets. Anyone new will have to send you a follow request that you approve manually. Good news—your old tweets automatically become private too, so you don’t need to go back and change anything one by one. Existing followers stay unless you remove them. The only trade-off is that your tweets won’t appear in public searches or be shareable outside your approved circle. If you’re looking to control your audience and stop random people from scrolling through your timeline, flipping that one setting will do the job.

Go to Settings → Privacy and Safety → Audience and tagging. Turn on “Protect your Tweets.” Once enabled, only approved followers see your posts. Existing followers stay; new ones must request access. Past tweets also become private.

I switched mine to private a while back. It takes literally 10 seconds. In the app, head into settings and toggle “Protect your Tweets.” After that, strangers can’t see your tweets, and anyone new has to request to follow you. All your old tweets automatically get locked too, so you don’t have to delete or redo them. It’s basically like making Twitter into a smaller, invite-only club. Honestly, best thing I did when I got tired of randoms lurking.

Toggle on “Protect your Tweets” in Privacy settings. This locks your account so only approved followers see your content. Old tweets lock too, but existing followers don’t need to re-request.

To make your Twitter account private, enable “Protect your Tweets” under Privacy settings. Once you do, all past and future tweets are hidden from non-followers. New followers must request approval. Current followers remain unless you manually remove them.

Hey, just head to Privacy settings and switch on “Protect your Tweets.” That locks your account immediately—no one new sees posts without your approval.

Click Settings → Privacy and Safety → Audience and tagging, then check “Protect your Tweets.” From then on, you approve followers manually, tweets are private, and strangers can’t search or see your content. Existing followers remain unaffected.
